Small changes. Big impact. Safer care
Rates of potentially preventable harm to patients in Canadian hospitals in 2022–2023 remained at 6 percent, the third year in a row with a higher rate compared to pre-pandemic numbers, according to new data released today by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Prior to 2020, the rate had been stable between 5.3 and 5.4 percent since 2014.
While generally safe, too many people experience unintended physical and psychological harms – including those caused by culturally unsafe care – across the health system. Change
is needed because safer care is always a goal, but the focus may have shifted from patient safety during the pandemic.
Organized by Healthcare Excellence Canada, Canadian Patient Safety Week (CPSW) is an annual campaign to inspire extraordinary improvements in healthcare safety and quality. The focus this year is on how even small changes can have a big impact when it comes to delivering safer care… ask a question. Having a quick conversation. Or proactively taking action.
We join Healthcare Excellence Canada, our colleagues and clients in partnering to make strides in patient safety, risk management and quality one small step at a time. Continuously striving to contribute to safer care.
World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety.
The Day brings together patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety.
World Patient Safety Day 2023 is dedicated to the theme “Engaging patients for patient safety” and the slogan “Elevate the voice of patients!”. The day aims to influence stakeholders including patients, families, policy makers, health care leaders, health workers and patient organizations to work collaboratively towards co-designing health care policies and safety interventions that truly reflect the needs and preferences of patients, ultimately enhancing healthcare safety globally.
This day (World Patient Safety Day) was established in 2019 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to enhance global understanding of patient safety, increase public engagement in the safety of health care and promote global actions to enhance patient safety and reduce patient harm.
Working together with our Shareholders (and partners); with our clients; through social media; through alliances with Healthcare Excellence Canada – we are contributing to the WHO mission of increasing understanding, engagement, and safety.

The Salus Global Corporation is pleased to announce the appointment of Kim Baker as President and CEO.
Kim is a health system leader and change champion who spent over a decade as Chief Executive Officer at Central Local Health Integration Network. Here she led transformative initiatives changing how the healthcare system delivers its best quality of care for patients. Most recently she led a Consulting practice working collaboratively with boards and leadership teams to ignite innovation, develop strategy, and foster creativity.
Kim joins Salus Global following the departure of Malcolm Eade who held the role for 10 years. Dr. Lisa Calder, Salus Global Board Chair and CEO of the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) commented, “We are thrilled to have attracted someone of Kim’s caliber and experience to lead Salus Global. Her unique combination of strategic healthcare leadership and consulting line up very well with the direction Salus Global is taking. I also want to sincerely thank and recognize Malcolm for his inspirational and impactful leadership over the past 10 years. He is leaving the company in great shape as we make this transition”.
Kim added, “I am very excited for the opportunity to build on the strong foundation that Malcolm and his predecessor, Dr. Ken Milne, created. moreOB from its original design and inception, through to its recent evolutions as part of SG.solutions, is an industry game-changer. The chance to not only support and leverage it, but also bring those benefits more widely to Canadian healthcare are in large part what fueled my decision to join this organization. In addition to the Canadian focus and expertise, the shared ownership by HIROC, the SOGC and the CMPA is another powerful factor. It just struck me as a win-win”.
